Learning of a mishap with a long-term isolation simulation as part of the Gargorian Deep Space Initiative, Yalara, Cydelia, Adrian and Jakob volunteered to go into the simulation in hopes of recovering the remaining first crew safely and discovering what went wrong that left them all thinking the simulation was the real deal.

They quickly learned that, from the perspective of those in the sim, one of their own had murdered a team member, leaving the remaining members terrified that one among them was a killer. The new team, armed with personality profiles of the first crew, did their best to investigate the murder, splitting up into teams so that no one would be left alone and unaccounted for - except for 8-Ball, the team's life support specialist, who had already barricaded himself inside the control room and only spoke via the intercom.

Testing samples from the body, Yalara discovered that the victim's neurochemistry had been altered, something she soon learned the entire initial team had in common. It seemed someone had interfered with the experiment, possibly hoping to make it fail. The spiked levels meant increased paranoia and decreased inhibitions all around. Meanwhile, Jake snaked his way into the surveillance system to try and get a sense of what happened, learning that someone had artfully deleted the capture from the time of the murder - someone who knew signals well enough to also wipe the buffer space to avoid recovery.

At the same time, Adrian joined one of the first team's technicians and their remaining doctor to help repair a failing power relay before it endangered the whole (virtual) ship. The lights flickered, and in the brief chaos the doctor was found unconscious. Adrian and the technician squared off, opting to trust one another long enough to get repairs done and link up with the others to sort out which of them might be working with the killer.

Following the operations manager, Cydelia learned about her romantic relationship with the victim and some of the other tensions among the first crew. They headed to 8-Ball's nest in the control center to try and convince him to join the others while they worked to uncover the truth. En route, Cydelia noticed a shadow following them. They managed to avoid it, and vice versa, but when they arrived at the control center they soon learned that it was unoccupied. 8-Ball had been roaming the ship freely, using the comms as a ruse to sell the fiction that he was still barricaded inside.

They hurried back to join the others who had already met up with Adrian to cart the remaining (and unconscious) doctor to the med bay where Yalara could see to her. Comparing notes, the group agreed that 8-Ball was the most likely suspect, and agreed to enter cryo for their own safety while the new team tracked him down to get some answers. Unfortunately, before entering cryostasis, the up-till-now helpful signals technician revealed himself as the killer, lashing out at Jake and Adrian as they assisted with the freezing process. The two traded off for Patterson's attention, narrowing avoiding a few blows before Adrian was caught and slammed face-first into one of the tubes. Patterson's aim backfired, however - waking up outside the simulation, Adrian immediately unplugged Patterson's connection, causing him to vanish from the sim just as Jake was working on tangling him up.

Back in the med bay, Dr. Kim awoke and revealed her own secret: as an active psion, she sensed from the get-go why the second team was here. She also sensed who the killer was, but had lacked an opportunity to come forward without risking immediate danger. The trio of medical techs started toward the cryo bay to help the others when they were intercepted by 8-Ball, who was all too thrilled to let the biologicals kill each other and leave him all the more peace and quiet to work in.

Thanks to their charm and confusion, Cy and Yalara were able to avoid the one shot from the robot's bolt gun and rush past him before he could reload. Jake sent a digital haymaker to storm the robot's senses while the others raced to cryo, tagging out of the simulation one by one just as 8-Ball hurried up the hall to finish them off. They awoke to find the medical techs already seeing to the members of the first team as well as desperately trying to stabilize Patterson.

News of the chemical anomaly pointing to a saboteur has Sona, the head of the project, deeply concerned, but her initial worry is for the survivor members of both teams to recover. The simulation project will need to be shelved until the mystery of who's responsible, and why, can be resolved.

Simulation Nights: Ghost House Party

Session starts here: http://untoldpaths.com/comment/282828#comment-282828

The simulation creators were back at it again! This time they had prepared a spooky haunted mansion simulation with lots of wings to explore. While it was definitely not for kids or the faint of heart, it promised to be a fun time. They had bonus objectives for each wing, and while many teams were scoring points, the bragging rights were the real goals.

They were given some basic character types to play, and then allowed to customize their avatars in any way they chose. Everything from the name to the look of the weapons could be chosen.

Adrian- Chose a cool bony skeleton as his avatar, "something humerus" as his callsign, the Kickpuncher class, and a big bone femur as his main weapon.
Darcy- Chose DJ Katt as her avatar, the callsign 9Lives, the seeker class, and a huge mallet as her weapon.
Pepper- Chose a Cyborg Cat as her avatar, the callsign Pepper, the support class, and an old fashioned zap gun as her weapon.

As they entered the sim, the house was layed out in four wings before them. Each had a theme and it's own objectives. And there was a central hub to give them a chance to decompress and plan between wings. They figured out a plan of attack, and then got started.

First Wing: East
Their first location was a straightforward haunted house. Complete with spooky paintings that revealed their true morbid images in flashes of lightning. There was a strange glitch with the fog outside, but the programmers quickly fixed it. They were greeted by a terrified ghost who led them to the boss of that wing. A terrible looking half tree creature with rooted legs and arms ending in razor sharp branches instead of fingers. Thankfully the three of them coordinated well and were able to use a combination of holy water and attacks to bring her down. They freed the ghost that had helped them, and they completed the first wing with 750/750 possible points earned.

Second Wing: West
For the second wing, it was all about body horror and medical heebie jeebies. They were quickly assailed by some ghosts, but they were able to fend them off. Pepper was feeling worried and the programmers came in to help turn down some of the details for her so that it would be less upsetting. With that, they were free to go after the big baddie. The evil surgeon was no match for the team, who used traps and attacks to completely mess him up. As they were preparing to leave, the textures around them suddenly disappeared and a warning message came up. It only lasted a moment before the programmers again fixed what had happened. After some healing, they headed back to the start with 750/750 possible points earned in this wing as well.

Third Wing: North
The third wing was a stinky bayou level, complete with rotting plant smell, huge spooky trees, and eerie animal sounds in the darkness around them. They were constantly on their toes to avoid the mucky ground as they made their way toward a small house in the middle of the swamp. As they neared it, they avoided the three behemoths outside and used a trash trap door in the kitchen to get silently into the house. They were then greeted by a creepy looking young girl and a very old man who had a sapphire in his chest. They retrieved the sapphire, knocked out the girl, avoided and injured the behemoths, and set fire to the house all before escaping back out the way they came. They beat a hasty retreat to a giant oak that they then slotted the sapphire into. The tree seems to awaken and summon giant toad like creatures that surround the group. The behemoths show up, and it's unclear whether they're all working together or not. But before too much damage can be done by anyone, the entire group feels heat start to grow around them in their pods. All of the creatures burst into flames, and even for them it's almost too much before the programmers stop a "problem with the firewall." David pipes in to congratulate them on completing the wing by discovering a "secret cheat code" and it sounds like he's even less sure of what happened as he forgets to silence his microphone before asking his team what happened in a very panicked voice. But the team gets 750/750 points total, and the sim is almost at an end.

Fourth Wing: South
The team had watched the previous group get completely destroyed by something in this ruined moss covered wing. So they came here last. Thankfully this one promised to have a waterslide at least. Which couldn't be all bad, right? They were greeted by a man down the hall who called to them to warn them of danger before he was attacked by something very big and fast. Soon it came back around the corner and they saw "Harold" the keeper of the wing. A terrifying creature that used sound to track it's prey, it zeroed in on the group and started trying to hunt them. Pepper and Darcy headed to the library and found some treasures and a stack of boobytrapped glass orbs. Adrian started to set a trap, but Harold heard him and stopped him from going with the others. As Adrian tried to throw a trap past Harold, it malfunctioned, effectively gluing him to the enemy. Pepper and Darcy triggered their trap to try to help Adrian before jumping on the waterslide. As it looked like they were escaping, 400 more points popped up to give them 400/750 total for this wing.

Oddly enough, that's when things went wrong. It seemed like some mystery jerk hacked into the simulation. All the previous glitches were likely him messing with things on his way in. After a brief tirade about some missing people, he invited everyone to come and find them to help figure out where the missing citizens had gone. But it was starting to look like it was also just a chance for him to prove he could remotely break into a very heavily controlled sim. After his speech, the simulation ended and they woke up in their pods. The programmers apologized profusely and gave them some parting credits and snacks as an apology for the way it had all gone. They seemed angry and embarrassed and the rest of the matchups were cancelled until they could shore up their defenses against an attack like that happening again.

The day after the sim, Adrian, Pepper, and Darcy would all get a message from the programming team. They apologized again, and gave them some in game achievements/emotes to apologize further. It wasn't much, but they seemed to want to make it right. And after how weirdly things had gone it seemed like there would need to be a better setup in the future.

Rewards:

Adrian/Pepper/Darcy- 15XP each (5Pxp, 5Ixp, 5Sxp)

100 credits each

In game item:

Achievement Unlocked- "Escaped the Swamp" This achievement unlocks an ultra rare VR game "/Heart of the Oak" emote where the character starts to toss a version of the heart of the oak sapphire into the air before one of the frog beasts leaps over their heads and devours it before running away and disappearing into a puff of snow. This is an account wide emote tied to the player so any time they log into one of these sims they can use it on any class they choose to play.

[Note: Thank you again so much for coming! I loved running this for you all and it was absolutely excellent to see you all kicking butt and taking names in there. You rock!]

Digital Dark: Dark Distress

Forums:

Digital Dark has not reared his virtual head in quite some time; however, it does not mean that there aren't events going on behind the bits and bytes.

Down on the planet's surface, a distress beacon is located in a dangerous, difficult-to-reach part of the Meonji Mountains. The Treatise Body will be seeking daring, adventurous types to brave the high, cold ground, rough landing, and some of the other "typical" possibilities such as Crowned, earthquakes, and volcanic activity.

Though a slow-post format, this will be plenty of action after the set-up; C death a small possibility, but there will be plenty of dangerous conditions. If you are up to putting your C through a challenge, then sign on up!

Will be starting this for approximately one week prior to Thanksgiving; I do anticipate things slowing down quite a bit around then, as well that the following week I will be doing a bit of international travel. I do intend on keeping up as much as I can during those times, and get things wrapped before 10 December. If this may cause any problems for folks, let me know and I'll push the session into January. Thanks!

When you give a Coyote a missile.

Saga:

My apologies for being late on this.
I thought I had my summary typed up already but I haven't been able to find it.
So more apologies for the rough summary as well.

It was looking to be just another help sort out some trouble with rather infamous trouble makers the Desert Coyotes.
However once those that had recieved the message requesting the help had gathered and were off on their way, things took a more worrisome turn as suddenly all signals went dead.

Fortunately those present, while keeping wary as they should, had the presence of mind to keep calm as they were introduced to the one that had called them.
A Ms. Kazia Németh, whom is one of three sibilings who run the Intrepid Depths Mining company.
While apologizing for the ill concieved clandestine meeting, she explained her reasoning as she had become aware of some rather troubling news.
Plans of the Coyotes to attempt to raid one of her company's sites on the planet as well as evidence which indicated that the Desert Coyotes were recieving help from those that appeared to be well situated to pass along intel to keep them ahead of any attempts to stop them, and perhaps even her own company.

Once appraised the gathered team agreed to help her out, especially as she explained the site they were heading to was suppose to be a hazardous materials holding site, which could provide the Coyotes with some nasty resources should they prove successful.
However due to the suspicions raised of inside help, the gathered team was now Kazia's insurance that they would keep the site safe and truly locked down. While also trying to see if the suspicsions were valid.

Upon arriving a supposedly active site appeared utterly abandoned - but not at the last moment as much of the equipment and facility already seemed to be moved or locked up. A bit odd considering this 'raid' chatter had come up fairly recent.

The team headed into the building, with full access provided by Kazia. Once inside they soon started to find many things that wasn't adding up.
Speculation came quick that perhaps Kazia wasn't telling all, especially considering first impressions. However with some indepth poking they discovered that Kazia was just as surprised as the rest of the team to find that not everything was as it seemed with the facility.

As the team secured the location, they soon discovered as they were digging about the digital records that someone else was remotely accessing the place trying to copy and destroy the records. Fortunately the team was able to undo some of the damage and recover some copies for themselves. While also leaving in traps which would alert them should anyone try accessing that data again.

However time soon ran short as the Coyotes started sending some arsenal to take the facility as they battled it out with a gathered Treatise Body Military (whom had planned to ambush the Coyotes, but as the team listened in and could see - the ambush was expected as Kazia had feared.) Eventually the Military prepared to pull out as they called in an air strike to deal the final blows to the Coyotes. Especially as later in the battle they were joined by an unknown ally, a sniper type, whom had started taking out some of the Coyotes anti-aircraft guns to help clear the way for the flight team and shuttle.

The team made quick work of the make shift battle truck and tank that approached. Clearing out the Coyotes that were driving them as well. Just in time for their ride out of there to land to extract them just as the air strike approached.

The ride out was a bit bumpy, but they managed to make out safe.
With new information which confirmed that the Coyotes apparently did have connections in some high places, something weird was at that facility, and the Coyotes really pissed off a sniper, South Ridge wasn't as empty as some had thought, and someone was out there recruiting kids (or someone kid like at least) to do some dirty work for them.

There are some more goodies, but I seemed to have misplaced that notebook ><
So its going to take me a bit to try and see if I can find a copy of the notes or reconstruct them. Very sorry!

Gargorian Station

With the return of the Southern Coalition Fleet and the four thousand refugees from the Gargorian homeworld, the Gargorian Colonists have been going through some tumultuous cultural changes. Their strongest generation was born on Sirian Planet and knows their homeworld and its traditions only second-hand - the sudden influx of those desperately clinging to those traditions after watching their planet be overrun is causing a lot of friction among them.

In hopes of holding the last of the Gargorians together socially, the Gargorian leadership leveraged the knowledge of the homeworlders to repair and relaunch the crashed colony ship (with a healthy amount of Zuxian patchwork they’d gathered over the decades). The new “frankenvessel” is not deep-space-worthy, but it is a serviceable long-term orbital habitat, and will give many Gargorians shelter and isolation from the Sirian Humans to allow for a period of healing and the reconstruction of a shared political and cultural identity.

The station is much smaller than Station Prime and has a capacity of roughly 10,000 people living comfortably. The smaller size also means that it lacks the means to feasibly synthesize gravity through significant rotational force, so the entire station is a zero-G environment. The Gargorians combat the dangers of long-term zero-G living through medicine and regimented exercise, along with a slight boost from the harvested Zuxian technology that makes up roughly a quarter of the ship and its systems.

Homeworld Hydroponics
The particular atmospheric filtering and farming setup on Gargorian Station utilizes many homeworld flora and fungi, along with the bioluminescent bacteria that naturally grows on them, giving the hydroponics installation a familiar glow for those missing home - or those who have never set foot on it.

The space doubles as both the lifeblood of the station’s closed environment and as a public venue for spiritual and psychological renewal and healing.

Hologyms
To encourage the regular exercise needed to maintain healthy living aboard a zero-G station, the Gargorians have a pair of dedicated holorooms specifically designed for a variety of exercise options to accommodate a variety of ability levels. These rooms have also been linked to the station network to allow for shared experiences with other holorooms, like those on Station Prime, if the users desire.

It’s extremely common for those on their regimented exercise shift to engage in virtual reality online gaming with the neighboring holoroom or those on Station Prime as a way to exercise without really having to think of it as such. This has made Gargorian gamers somewhat notorious in certain types of hologames in a relatively short time.

Laboratory Wing
An entire section of the Gargorian station is dedicated to a variety of science and medicine laboratories for further advancement, development and study. The lab equipment is currently the most advanced in orbit, and collaboration with scientists and doctors from other Treatise Body nations is frequent.

In their continuing efforts to establish a deep space program to search for habitable worlds, the Gargorian Deep Space Initiative wanted to study the effects of long-term isolation on a small crew of technicians responsible for a larger populace kept in stasis during the voyage. Leveraging the rich virtual worlds used by Pinnacle Station and the digizens of the Treatise Body, they created a sim that allowed them to simulate an accelerated timeline to see long-term effects without much real-world time invested.

But now something has gone wrong - the latest batch of testers aren't waking up. The Initiative has been quietly asking for volunteers to help them go into the sim and find out what's happened so that they can safely bring the others out without causing lasting psychological or physiological harm.

[A little bit of a space horror adventure with some investigation and just a little combat but mostly slasher-film-style tension throughout.]

Saga:

Characters involved:

Following a tip from TB Intel, a small team went to Pinnacle Station, the former Mecha City, to investigate rumors of an impending bombing. Investigating the freighter said to have brought the ordinance in, the group was able to trace the chemicals to a residential district within the station. Interrogating the pilots and hacking the freighter's logs revealed a mystery passenger they'd brought aboard from near Shrapnel City who had been researching the same region.

The group headed there, with Pepper's drone for an advance scout. It discovered a familiar face - the bomber Le Cafard responsible for the Ardiel bombings, now in a new body - lurking in the basement of a random apartment building surrounded by ordinance. An EMP flash knocked out the drone feed, along with surveillance in the area, just as the group was arriving.

Macera was able to get a localized antenna to let them get the word out and get local security inbound while the others followed the sound of a scream to the upper levels of the apartment complex, where Le Cafard had already shot Dee, the hacker from the small team brought in to replace Le Cafard for future bombings against the Treatise Body populace.

While Pepper worked on a new drone in the basement to try and disarm the substantial ordinance that was rigged up, Elena and Adrian worked to talk Le Cafard down. In the end, it was enough to distract them while Jake got a shot off to disable their gun arm, giving a wounded Dee the opportunity to leap out the window and drift down to the street level thanks to the station's microgravity.

After a brief verbal sparring with the team upstairs, Le Cafard started the timer on the explosives and leapt after Dee. Jake moved to the window and was able to squeeze off another two shots, taking a heavy shot himself for his troubles. Elena got him patched up as she worked to get as many people out of the building as she could. Meanwhile, Adrian and Pepper teamed up to take out the bomb, which had a nasty set of failsafes to ensure that everything went bomb. With seconds left on the clock, they were able to disable the last failsafe, robbing Le Cafard of the satisfying kaboom.

Wounded and low on ammunition, and with station security moving in, Le Cafard opted for a tactical retreat, giving the group time to follow up with Dee. Elena was able to keep her from bleeding out in a lonely alley while Adrian and Jake worked out plans for getting her off the station (in exchange for what she knows) and setting a future trap for Le Cafard as they continue to try to clean up loose ends.

Their local contact on Pinnacle Station set up an alert to watch for Le Cafard and try to catch them before they leave the station. Some days after the incident, the news will break of bodies discovered at a local backup facility, including two robotic backup technicians and a third human-passing robotic body matching the description of Le Cafard. All records of the backup and reloading of any ID have been wiped from the station's logged. By all appearances, Le Cafard has loaded into a third body and found their way off the station during the confusion, though they have now made a new enemy in the Mecha King in addition to the Treatise Body Administration.

In exchange for her assistance incriminating the New Domai Independents in their involvement in the Ardiel bombings, Dee is publicly announced as dead and giving a new ID to disappear into the very station she was hired to help bomb, now functionally in witness protection on Ardiel. Her information will open new avenues in diplomatic relations between the TB and the NDI that will be the TB leverage to help avoid any future aggression without opening both nations up to open war in space.

Description

Pinnacle

Pinnacle is a relatively small station that could house roughly 50,000 physical persons but it largely built around the housing and upkeep of massive server banks which house millions of digital persons - the former residents and citizens of Mecha City. Claiming "we need to evolve," the Mecha King designed and launched the new space station into high orbit, a sizable distance from the planet with a slightly exaggerated day/night cycle.

While designed primarily around the server room and associated backup and communication equipment, the station is capable of housing physical persons and is home to a number of robotic chassis usable by any of the digital citizens and used for physical and diplomatic interactions with neighboring stations.
Pinnacle follows on Mecha City's general policy of isolationism, protecting its citizens and its sovereignty first and foremost with no apparent expansionist ambitions. They are loosely allied with the Treatise Body after the TB sent agents to defend Mecha City in its hour of need, but with a pragmatic ruler, Pinnacle only treats such alliances with so much reverence now that they are able to defend themselves independently again.
