Discussion Room

I'm putting this here because I'm not sure it really fits in General or Technical.

I was thinking now that we have a semi Social Department, we might want a room for 'talks' to occur. Some would say Discussion. That works. But I was thinking of something where the room can be locked so only the participants can enter as well as hiding it from the Power Search so random busy body's don't come in and watch, and possibly participate. Only takes one post to do harm or to unbalance something.

If that's already in place, well then, just call me a chihuahua. yip yip

It is... PMs. ;) Or are you looking for department chat rooms?

Well I was thinking like today when you went to the Discussion Room to chat with Savior. Just a way to keep busy bodies out or nosey people who might pipe up when they shouldn't. But yes, I suppose it could work for all the departments too.

Technically that feature's

Technically that feature's already there - SH's can make a room with a users allowed list. I'd have to code a way to bump people per roles though :-/

I'm not sure if we want to put social people in rooms alone with a member - transparency being one of the principles now. Stuff that's not public would be going into PMs anyways, I'd hope. That was one of the reasons why we were requiring 2 people in mediation PMs - second pair of eyes and witness.

Dunno if it's worth the effort given the options available? I'll defer that one to LadyK though - she might have a better feel for where the department needs to head. If they want to do the work in rooms or PMs.

Hm...

Well, I think for mediations, it definitely needs to be in PMs. When we get the mediators set up (hopefully very soon) it's going to be set up that there will be one mediator running the discussion, and they'll CC one of the social leads on. Or if a lead is involved in the mediation a second mediator can be used. In either case, for that sort of situation, the PM format gives people a little longer to think and formulate their answers. Then hopefully they can respond with cooler heads. Kinda like a slow post versus a normal RP. :)

However, we have a good instance to point to for when the discussion room really helped. It was good to get that sort of immediate feedback and discussion going. In theory, I'd hope that other players would use common sense. If someone went in and "lit a stick of dynamite" and then ran, they would be held accountable for their actions. So I would hope that if we needed to talk to someone quickly, we could do that in the discussion room without there being issues. But that might also be a good point to just push someone towards PMs if it looked like it was about to get additional comments that could be damaging. I view the discussion room just like I do other RP. If someone's curious, they'll go in and look, even if they weren't on when it happened.

Although that does bring up a bigger concern for me. If someone wanted to vent about their frustrations with another player, the discussion room is public. So it's possible that after the fact we might have someone walking in and getting blind sided by some harsh words. So then dealing with that is really tricky. We want people to feel like they can talk, but the code of conduct should/would absolutely apply in a room that anyone could access. So if someone goes in there and just starts ranting, that's also going to be out in the public eye forever.

For right now, I'd like to keep it in PMs for the most part, and the Discussion room for quick pulls aside in order to ask questions. If that gets abused down the line, or if it proves to be an unsustainable process, I like Boblet's idea of having a truly private room for that. But given that it's a lot more work, I'd like to see if we can be trusted to handle it with a public room for the time being. What I'll do is I'll make a file and I'll keep track of the next few mediations and casual talks that we have in the discussion room. I'll work out a spread sheet of sorts and hopefully figure out what works, and what doesn't. Then from there, we'll figure out how to proceed. :)

Sounds good :) I figure it's

Sounds good :) I figure it's not too hard to keep track of - the CoC's pretty clear about abusive lang and harassment as it is - so easy to just keep in mind it applies there for anyone who wants to kick a hornet's nest.

well I meant to like lock and unlock a room. Go to discussion room, appropriate people are there. Lock it so no one else can enter. Discuss. Then unlock it and leave with option to "clean" it. Still gets recorded so there are logs of it and such. But make it so yeah if during a discussion, someone is venting, the next group doesn't come in and go "AAiiyeeeee!"
